Six Essential Tips to Achieve Results with Your Online Job Search

5. Go Mobile

One of the most convenient ways to post your resume to any job you see fit is to save it in your phone as an attachment. The process is quick and handy in case you are away from your computer and want to be the first to respond to a new opportunity. I was on the road (while stuck in traffic) and I received a new job posting notification from one of the job apps I registered through (also recommended is to download their apps for a faster response). I wasn’t going to get to my computer for another hour. Luckily, I had my resume saved on my phone. I applied to the job and attached my resume. By the time I got home, I received a call from that staffing agency.

The only downside to this is you may not be able to make any quick modifications to meet the requirements of the job you see online. Yet, save an editable version, just in case. If time allows, download and use Microsoft Office 365, Google Docs, or Apple Documents for a quick edit and send.

6. You have to want it!!

This last tip is self-explanatory but very important to understand. Most things happen because you desire to make a change in your routine and when it happens its great feeling. However, there are times when you think of doing it…..and you think of doing it tomorrow…and you think of doing it in an hour….until you realize you never DID ANYTHING, but think of it. It’s only a thought, not a goal-oriented action. One of my all-time great actors Denzel Washington said: “Dreams without goals are just dreams, and they can ultimately fuel disappointment.”

While I was on the train heading home from work (another contract job), I had the opportunity to sit next to a young man and we conversed about working a 9 to 5 profession. He stated that he doesn’t think he can hold a job due to his speech impediment. I had similar minor struggles during my youth (especially when I get nervous or excited). So after I told him I can relate, I stated that it should not stop him from getting what he wanted and that was a job. I gave him my business card and told him that I would be willing to help build his resume and post it online to all the job and career sites. “All you have to do is call me when you are ready,” I said.

I never received that call…

My point is simple; you have to want to make changes to achieve better things for yourself. Unfortunately, he wasn’t the last person I’ve given my card who wanted a job or career changed and I never received the call. Maybe it’s me, and if that’s the case I can accept it. However, a job is not going to call you out of the blue without knowing who you are, or your experience. You have to make the attempt. Don’t paralyze yourself with choosing the perfect strategies for the greatest results the first time. Just get it done and tweak as you go – this is building your resume. Post to as many job and career sites as possible; that’s how results occur. You can’t sit off the grid, making excuses and expecting others to get the job for you. You have to do the groundwork. Believe me; the pay-off is worth it and self-gratifying.
